Energy Up!

Energy Up! at the Friedman Diabetes Institute

As part of our commitment to helping people with diabetes live fuller, healthier lives, the Friedman Diabetes Institute has partnered with the wellness expert who is better known by the very fitting name "High Voltage." She has used her unique "Energy Up!" program to help people across the country improve their lives by building self-esteem, eating more nutritious food and exercising more. Good nutrition and exercise are proven ways to help manage diabetes and, in some cases, prevent it, making Voltage and the Friedman Diabetes Institute ideal partners.

"I want to empower New Yorkers to change their own behavior, to get them feeling fit, fabulous and fierce," Voltage says. "It's not just about weight loss. It's about attitude."

Energy Up! uses Voltage's Five Points to help people live healthier lives:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Use positive affirmation to motivate yourself
  • Practice kindness and forgiveness - to others and to yourself
  • Eat healthy
  • Get up and move your body!

Proven results
Voltage's method of making healthy living fun while building self-esteem has received national attention.

Columbia University researchers documented the results of her Energy Up! program in a group of mostly Latina girls at Mother Cabrini High School in Washington Heights. They published their findings in the Journal of Adolescent Health and noted that obese girls lost an average of nearly 13 pounds. The school's principal pointed out that every girl that participated in the program improved in grades, class participation, and attitude toward school.

Voltage says there are two reasons Energy Up! principles work so well: First, because people feel and see results almost immediately. Second, because Voltage makes it entertaining and fun.
